Olafsfjordur (Ólafsfjörður) Fishing Town
Olafsfjordur (Ólafsfjörður) Fishing Town
North of Dalvik is the small fishing town of Olafsfjorður, with its sheltered natural harbour. Olafsfjorður used to be very isolated as the only access road hugged the notorious Olafsfjarðarmuli cliff, a dangerous drive with a dizzying drop to the fjord.
In 1990 a 3.4km tunnel was opened to connect the town with Dalvik, bypassing the cliff, though many stories of its perils remain! During the summer, the surrounding mountains, lake, and black sand beaches offer many contrasting vistas, and there are a variety of hiking trails. A second tunnel now links Olafsfjorður and uninhabited Hedinsfjorður with Siglufjorður, allowing a scenic circular drive around the Trollaskagi Peninsula.
Heðinsfjorður is nearly 6km long and is popular with anglers as it has good sized trout and other sea fish. During winter, snowcat trips take skiers and snowboarders to the mountains to descend off-piste routes.
