Quake 2008

A powerful earthquake, 6,3 Richter scale, struck the Southern part of Iceland at 3:45 pm on the 29 May 2008. The epicentre of the quake was about 2 Km southeast of Hvera­gerdi. The highest alert was immediately announced in Hvera­gerdi and neighbouring areas as a huge aftershock was expected. 


The exhibition presents the huge impact that the earthquake had on Hvera­gerdi. Screens show the recordings from surveillance cameras and information from The Earthquake Engineering Research Centre. Visitors of Quake 2008 can experience a powerful earthquake (6+ Richter) and an earthquake fissure that was encountered at the building site in 2003 is visible in the floor and is illuminated up for visitors.
