Offshore, the island of Eldey boasts Iceland’s biggest gannet colony- with luck you may see some of these large seabirds diving torpedo-like for their food. By the car park stands a life-sized sculpture of a great auk. Standing 3ft tall, the last great auk was hunted to extinction on Eldey in 1844.
Iceland’s first lighthouse was built on the headland in 1878. After the building was damaged during an earthquake, the current operational lighthouse was constructed in 1907, a little further away from its original location.
It’s an easy walk up to the top of the headland and the ocean views are certainly worth effort but stay away from the edge for your safety.
The gravel road to the lighthouse and shore may not be accessible in winter.
