Saudarkrokur (Sauðárkrókur) A Town with a Unique Industry
With around 2,500 inhabitants, Saudarkrokur is one of the larger towns in the north of Iceland and a center for the broad and fertile valley of the Skagafjordur hinterland.
The town is home to a unique factory where the fish skin is made into fashion items. This unusual industry processes the skin into beautifully soft, high-quality leather. The leather comes in over 100 colors, silver, and gold among them, and is sold to international fashion houses such as Prada and Dior.
The Skagafjordur Transport Museum has an eclectic collection of machinery and vehicles, the oldest dating from the mid 19th century.
Saudarkrokur has shops, restaurants, a swimming pool, and other services for visitors.
North of the town, gravel road 748 ends at Reykir, where a natural hot spring feeds Grettislaug, a bathing pool by the sea – there’s an honesty box for contributions towards its upkeep. From here there's a great view of the island of Drangey. Drangey can be visited on a boat excursion from Reykir and Saudárkrokur.
