Sel Farm

Sel Farm

Throughout the centuries glacial rivers have constantly changed course, often submerging their sandy plains under floodwater from eruptions under the icecaps. Consequently, farms moved from the plain to the hillside and examples can be seen in Skaftafell.

The farm Sel was built in 1912, with the cowshed underneath the living quarters, utilizing the warmth from the animals for the farmer and his family. Sel is part of Iceland´s heritage, under the care of The National Museum and is well worth a visit, not least for its spectacular views.

To reach Sel, drive as if going to the Visitor Centre but continue further along road 9896, turn left up to the gravel slope and park. From there, Sel farm is a short walk past the farm Bölti (also a guesthouse). If access by road is not permitted, you can walk from the campsite at Skaftafell, following around the base of the hill to Lambhagi, where a path follows the stream uphill to join the road.
