Selfoss Town
Selfoss Town
The largest town in South Iceland and a service center for the surrounding farming community, Selfoss is home to Iceland’s biggest dairy, which produces cheese and the famous ‘skyr’.
Selfoss is sited on the banks of the Olfusa, the first major river to be bridged and completed with much difficulty in 1891. On the river bank by the bridge stands a historic timber building, now a cafe and restaurant.
The name Selfoss suggest a waterfall but here you will only find rapids in the river, along with some small islands. A local legend tells of a girl who turned into a troll-wife when her stallion failed to win a horse fight. She fled in anger to the mountains, using the islands as stepping stones.
You’ll find a range of shops and services on the main road through the town. The main shopping center is by the roundabout near the bridge.
