Skaftafellsjokull (Skaftafellsjökull) glacier
Duration: 1.5 hours. Difficulty: easy, mostly on the flat. Interest: flora, views of the glacier, geology. Start/End: the trail starts just to the right of the Visitor Centre at Skaftafell.
Pick up a leaflet for this walk at the Visitor Centre – it describes the different numbered geological features along the route.
Walk through birch woodland to the moraines at the snout of this broad glacier tongue.
It’s a circular route and you follow the path back over the moraines to return to your point of departure.
Note it is dangerous to approach or try and get on the glacier itself without the rope, ice ax, crampons, and a guide.
