Thingeyri (Þingeyri) Village

Thingeyri (Þingeyri) Village

Þingeyri village, on the south coast of Dýrafjörður, was established as a trading post and its old warehouse - dating from 1734 - ranks among the oldest buildings in Iceland. The church was built in 1911 and designed by Iceland´s first state architect. It has a beautiful interior and the altarpiece, painted by an Icelandic artist, shows Jesus blessing children with the unmistakable West Fjords landscape in the background. Also in Þingeyri, check out events at the Viking Centre, which include sailing trips on a replica Viking boat. For those with a 4WD vehicle, drive to the viewpoint on Sandafell (367m). You will need to walk the last section but it’s worth it for the panoramic fjord view.
