Vaglaskogur - A Beautiful Birch Forest

Vaglaskogur - A Beautiful Birch Forest

By taking a 4km detour from road 1 you can visit Vaglaskogur, Iceland’s second largest natural birch forest, on the banks of the Fnjoska river.

Exceptionally tall and straight birch trees grow in this sheltered spot, the highest about 14m. Walking trails lead through the forest area and you’re likely to spot redwing, common snipe, when, and other birds.

The forest has been in the care of the Iceland Forestry Service since the early 20th century and is a really enjoyable place for a picnic.
