Vididalstunga (Viðidalstunga) and Kolugljufur (Kolugljúfur) Gorge

Viðidalstunga was an important and wealthy farm in the Middle Ages. Iceland’s priceless historical manuscript, the Flateyjarbok ‘the book of Flatey’ was written here in 1400 using vellum from the skins of 112 calves.

Bishop Brynjolfur Sveinsson later made a gift of the manuscript to the Danish King. It remained in the royal library until 1971 when thousands of Icelanders turned up on the capital’s quayside to greet it on its return by ship to Iceland.

South of the present day farm, the River Vididalsa plunges over two waterfalls into a mile long gorge, Kolugljufur. A trail traces the rim of the canyon.
