Vikingaheimar (Víkingaheimar) Viking Museum

Vikingaheimar (Víkingaheimar) Viking Museum

Iceland was settled during the Viking era and the Icelandic Sagas are a great source of information about how people lived at the time and what the Vikings got up to elsewhere!

In the year 2000, the Islendingur, an exact replica of a Viking ship, sailed the route taken by the Vikings who discovered America, centuries before Columbus. This ship, which was built in Iceland, is now on display at Vikingaheimar, the Viking World museum in Reykjanesbaer.

It is possible to board the ship and from interactive screens learn how it was built and sailed on its incredible journey. The museum also houses a replica of the Viking settlement in America, L´Anse aux Meadows, in Newfoundland.

The towns that makeup Reykjanesbaer include Keflavik, where you will find cafes, restaurants and a variety of shops. There’s a pleasant stroll along a seafront path here and the small-boat harbor is a picturesque spot.
